Elisha and Acher’s (Not So) Excellent Adventure, from Chagigah 14b

By Avi Tuchman and Eliana Michelle

Talmud, interpreted by emerging artists

High school is hard, even for perfect student Elisha ben Abuya.

So, when a wisecrack gets him suspended, he decides to throw away his good guy persona in favor of a more rebellious reputation, with a new name, Acher. Much to the dismay of his protégé Meir, Acher is now seen as a negative influence, despite the important lessons Acher continues to pass on. Will Acher only be judged for who he has become, rather than who he was? Or will everyone realize that it is the soul, not the behavior, that make the man? In the vein of a classic ’80s movie, “Elisha and Acher’s (Not So) Excellent Adventure” explores, through a mix of comedy and drama, the dichotomy between the person and the soul.
